The Cross family initiated this scholarship to honor the achievements of students in Michigan by helping graduates get a strong start after high school. The family has resided in the Kalamazoo area since 1948. Both Crosses, daughters, and a granddaughter graduated from Kalamazoo area schools. Over the years, all the Crosses have spent many hours volunteering for local school districts in various roles, and the eldest daughter is currently in her eleventh year of teaching in the area.
